CD players wasn't OEM installed untill the 1990's in most cars.

60's had AM radio (option)
70's had AM/FM, with option of 8track (option for FM and 8 track)
80's had AM/FM, tape player (option for tape player)

then aroung 94 or so CD's was installed OEM, but as an option

It would be cool to pick up a used 8 track player to put in the VW.

CD players were not on common use until after 1980. My 1968 bug had one in 1984.

easy wire your stock stuff to any cd player output, wala..
