ok everyone here's the scoop. my fiancee` used to go to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and he wants to convert to Catholicism but he doesn't know how to tell his parents. Especially his mom since she grew up in that church. How do I help him get the courage to stand up to her? He's so afraid she'll take it out on me and he doesn't want that.

Just go do it.

If his mom gives you flack about it, or him flack about it, tell her that she has a choice. Then lay out that choice to her.

1. Respect your fiance's condition, and accept it without taking out her displeasure on anyone, ever. This would include condemning (in any way) for converting, and it certainly would include not blaming you for it.

or

2. She will be cut off from contact with either of you until such time as she decides to respect your decision and understands that the topic is off limits for her to even bring up with either of you.

It's truly none of her business, or anyone's except your fiance's and yours. If you set up firm boundaries and STICK with them, this is how it will remain.

If I were you and your fiance, I would write her a letter about it, and include those conditions in it right from the very start. Don't even let her get started on her crap. Cut it off at the pass from the beginning.

Tough situation, but he has to decide which is more important, living by the truth, or pleasing Mom and Dad. If he is old enough to make such a crucial life decision, then what others may think of his choice should be secondary.

START YOUR OWN CHURCH, SO THE RESPECTIVE PARENTS WILL BE EQUALLY SATISFIED
