One thing to keep in mind is that there can be TOO many toys. Children can become easily overwhelmed when there are too many choices. Pick up several totes.... put cars in one, legos in another, blocks and so on.... then depending on the number and ages you have at the time let the kids partner up and pick one box. They can switch after a while or trade it for another box after they pick the first one up.

I have a pool at my home (I'm a provider) but there are so many regulations here that it's almost not worth it. Here you must have a fence that goes 4 ft above the top of the pool and if it doesn't have a pump you have to empty it daily. But the kids love the water... I would advise going with a sprinkler though.

My kids (day care kids) love to draw and color. But the coloring books aren't so popular. Typing paper actually seems to be the most popular around here.

And save any large cardboard boxes... ask your friends to save them also.... these can make for HOURS of fun... let them draw on the boxes and set them up as "houses" or make a "train" out of them or "tunnels" the possibilities are endless. What's more is that they flatten down well for easy storage!

Let the kids make their own pizza's for lunch... use the roll biscuits and let them put the sauce, cheese and toppings on... then bake it (that's your part) and then they have their own lil pizza bites. Or let them pick out a cookie cutter to make their own specialy shaped sandwhich....

Really you don't need to buy much... kids are enthralled by the most tedious things!

A play kitchen - dress up box - puzzles - books - lots of art supplies - swing set - not a pool (too much work) - sand box
