my ex-boyfriends little brother contacted me last night and this is one of the questions he asked... he and his family think that my ex's ADHD medicine is causing him to think he's gay or bi... his brother has other concerns about him, but this is the oddest

oh, and please, no answers telling me gay people are bad, wrong, devil's people or any of that crap cuz unlike many people here, I'm not against it... I was raised to accept people however they come.

ADHD medication has been around for some time now, and there is no evidence to show that it causes any such thoughts. If he's having those thoughts, it's very unlikely that it has anything to do with ADHD or its medications.

wow, I have never heard of any medications turning someone gay. My son is on 2 adhd meds and hasn't said he might be gay. I wouldn't love him any less if he were gay but sure wouldn't blame a medication on it. People are born that way. If meds could make people be straight then everyone would have to take them a birth! lol, if they were the children of all the religious people out there. I am lesbian and never took adhd meds... so yeah whatever

No, there is no 'medication' that can 'cause' the person to think he is gay or bi ... but that medication can help him to 'focus' and possibly 'see' something about himself that he'd been 'missing' when he had the ADHD 'actively.' So ... I'd say that in all probability your ex is either gay or bi ... and you and his family should 'support him' and give him 'all the love you have' as he goes through this 'realization' ... it's a very difficult road, but by your question here, I can tell that you are a caring young woman ... so tell them the truth, and help them to 'understand' and accept him as he 'truly is' ... and also be there to 'listen' as he struggles to 'accept himself.' I will be praying for all of you ... and I don't believe God is 'against' gays, at all ... I think that he 'loves them the same as he loves all of us' ... and I hope 'the best' for all of you in this 'time of crisis' in this young man's life.

There's no connection between ADHD medication and being gay. You're either gay or you're not. ADHD meds absolutely will not MAKE you gay, and I can't see how they could even make you believe you're gay if you're not.
I suppose it's possible that if someone already is gay, maybe certain ADHD meds could be a factor in making him realize that.

I've never heard of medication making someone think they're gay, but I guess you never know. Maybe he's just gay. Lots of gay people are in straight relationships for years before they realize or want to acknowledge that they're actually gay.

One of the ADHD meds my son took-I can't remember the name, made him high as a kite.
Also, if a person is misdiagnosed with aDHD and really has Bipolar disorder this can cause phychosis-where a person looses touch with reality. Any or none of these are possible.

No meds can make someone think they are gay. Homosexuality is not something that just happends. NO medicines can make someone think they are gay, nore think that they are not gay. So no, if he thinks he's gay, he probably always has been. And just because he has dated you, doesnt mean anything, alot of gay people will date the opposite sex because they dont want to face to fact that they are gay.

No, those medications only cause you to slow down enough to really pay attention and think through things. Maybe he's now able to concentrate on certain things - just not the things his parents wanted him to focus on.

I would not rule it out completely, since those little pills have a tendancy to "mess" with ones brain, afterall thats there "objective"
However, I would not necessarilly jump to such a radical conclusion, maybe he should be encouraged to speak to a therapist, and be sensitve about it, because for all we know is he simply is, or even has been in the closet with his sexuality!
PS Im straight an if your ever in Phoenix, look me up!

Many medications can effect hormones and levels. You or he may check into this, to see if this is the case. Other medications that effect mood can do this.
