If your Navy-bound friend ends up in explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) or a Navy Construction Battalion (Seabees) or as a Hospital Corpsman who goes through Field Medical Service School, his chances of going to Iraq are pretty high. If your Air Force-bound friend winds up with an AFSC in Security Police or any of the base support positions, there is a good chance he will go as well. The three Navy areas I mentioned are the source of almost all Navy combat-related casualties in Iraq. As for the Air Force, the former Iraqi Ballad Air Base has had part of it named for an Airman who lost his life in Iraq.
Now, before you freak out about this, consider that both of them could have been among the 9,555 active duty dead during the years 1980-84 when no one was shooting at us.
I wish both of them well and thank them for deciding to serve this nation.

One has a contract with the last line that reads "navy needs come first" the other "air force needs come first" It's there trust me.
That line item can cancel out everything else. Both of them have a 50/50 chance and depending on what job they wind up taking can take them to the head of the line.

The chances are better for the friend in the Air Force, as there is no water in Iraq.

It's probably about the same for both of them. I've seen about the same of either branch in Baghdad.
