what would you say is more important in school, the knowledge that you receive, or the grades that you earn? because to me, the knowledge seems rather useless, there's rarely any real-life applications and chances are you'll forget most of what you learned over winter break or the summer. grades, however, measure your "ability" to learn something, which is something that can't really be forgotten and may be forever essential.
however, my friend tells me that you should seek knowledge rather than just a grade because you can continue to use that knowledge outside of the class, while the grade is related only to the class itself. so what really is more important, grades or knowledge?

In my book, knowledge is more important. You will find that you will use that knowledge eventually. Trust me!

In school the grades matter because of the type of student you want to be. There are the external and internal rewards for getting good grades. External being the recognition from teachers/administration (honor roll, certificates/diplomas, scholarships, etc). Internal rewards are the sense of accomplishment and an overall good feeling about yourself. Grades and knowledge should be intertwined. You have to learn the stuff in order to get good grades. Memorizing is one thing, but you will always remember what you learn if you are a good student. You have forums such as this to share your knowledge with others and that is a form of real world application.

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive.
The grade tells you how much of the concept you have grasped. If you have a B you know about 80 percent of the topic. It is merely a measurement for what you have gleened.
As for knowledge, that is applied learning. You can learn the concept of addition and apply that knowledge to balance your checkbook. You can learn the concept of pressure and know that you can only stuff so many items into a container before it will burst. I think you short change knowledge because you take it for granted.

For now grades and knowledge come hand in hand. When you leave school you will probably use most of the knowledge you have learnt such as in maths. You won know that you will use this knowledge but you will in every day life from purchasing items in a shop to cooking andadding up items tosell for a customer if you work in the retail industry. They are just minor examples.Real life applications will come through what you have learnt.

I think school is meant to teach us to think and solve problems for future success in life. Some knowledge you will retain, some you won't. Grades are a necessary evil - low grades can prevent you from doing what you want when you get out of high school, or if you are in college, low grades can make it necessary to take the course over again!
The most important thing is...how HARD are you willing to work to make things happen in your life? Many people I know never went to college, but busted their butts and are now very successful and happy. Hard work is what you learn in school (or don't learn)!

Your testimony and philosophy about schools and grades is actually pretty good. Let me see if I can address this from a teacher perspective: Learning is something that you will do for the rest of your life - as long as you live - there is going to be something to learn. You could probably take a child who has never attended school, but was in the world and traveled and had more experiences and would probably not be able to pass the same kinds of tests you would, but overall would have more knowledge of the world - have applied the knowledge and use of the world in his or her life.
Schools, in my opinion tend to block learning to some degree. There are so many patterns, guidelines and rules that we must follow. For the rest of your school years you are graded and compared with students your age all over the US and the world,. And when the rubber meets the road - it does none of us any good. Every year when I return to school, I am faced with the data of "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND.. What are the reading scores of this grade compared to that grade - what are the math scores - what teacher can we blame? It's nonsense. I believe students want to learn and grow, but when you have to place the handcuffs of grades on them, they weaken - but we have to have some way of measuring your growth in comparison to other students. You will never learn all you need to in school. The best learning you will ever get is to take what you have learned and go out the door with it. Find yourself a mentor, someone who is wise in the way things are - read yourself plenty of books about life and everything - and travel, travel, travel. Learn languages, learn philosophy, learn history, learn sociology, talk to people, talk to the elderly, work in various jobs, walk in somebody else's shoes - and you will gain not only knowledge - but wisdom as well. You have to be hungry for information and it won't matter if it is summer or winter - you will always be learning something. One summer, go work on a farm. That's an education you won't find in any book. Go and live with the Menonites, live on a Reservation with the Native Americans, be an exchange student, live in another country, preferably, third world - you'll learn, you'll find out more than you ever dreamed. And if you can't go - READ....READ....READ...... Yes, grades are necessary for our school systems to establish where each student is, but your knowledge and your education is up to you - what you want to learn and how you want to live and produce in this world - is up to you.

knowledge (from learning) is important... of course you realize that your grades are just a measure of the knowledge learned. If you wish to continue your education... then grades are important to show what knowledge you've gained so that you can "move" on in that particular subject.
If you are learning for fun or to better yourself just "because" then grades are not important.

Well I have to agree with your friend.
I think true knowledge means something that you wont forget. You forget the facts that they give you but when something really leaves an impression on your mind is when that is knowledge.
Grades only determine what you might have memorized.
