Need a fax number?

I was thinking of getting an HP Printer, scanner, copier and fax machine. Do I need to get a fax number or can i use the normal house phone number? If i can use the current house phone number, how does this interefee with an answering machine?

You can use the present phone number.

You can set the FAX to automatic pickup (when it hears incoming FAX tone) but that means your answering machine won't work because the FAX already answered.

You could set it to manual pickup which means that if someone wants to send you a FAX you need to tell them to call you before sending it so you can do the pickup. Thatis much easier.

If you subscribe to distinctive ring service from your phone company then you can set the FAX to use one of the unique ring tones as its automatic pickup signal (but that gets expensive).
