First, the entire idea of a "unified" school system in Los Angeles is absolutely crazy. The very first step in fixing it should be to completely divide the system into numerous, independent systems of manageable size.
Second, given the polyglot nature of the system and the power of racial politics you'll never get a school board that can put the best interest of the students first.
Third, until the administration of the schools are able to take actual physical control of the schools nothing can be done. Did you see what went on during the "march" last May? ... Thousands of students walking out, jumping the fences, and strolling away. Anarchy.

It's not just the LA system that's messed up. I live in Cleveland OH, and refuse to send my grandkids to the public schools I home school them. It's a national disgrace when you're afraid to send your kids to school. Afraid not only for their physical well being, but also disgusted with what is offered as a curriculum. This nonsense about no child left behind is really revolting. Doesn't that translate into "no child gets ahead?"
I know one girl who was promoted from the 8th grade with three F's. The F's were in Math, English and Science. How can they rationalize passing a child like that? It would be like expecting a child to learn to read when they didn't know the sounds different letters made, or building a house with no foundation. It just simply will not work.
Our educational system has really gone down hill, and we need to step up and do something about it. Kids are graduating without the ability to spell or do basic math. I know what I'm talking about. I was a tutor in college and saw the end result of high school diplomas. It truly is shocking.

My cousin taught in LA Unified for quite a few years but eventually left due to the unrealistic demands of the bureaucracy there.. The district is the largest in the country which makes it difficult to give the necessary attention to individual schools and classrooms.

The whole school system is messed up. In America, we have no competition among the schools, which is essential to any good industry. Competition should be praised in America, without it you wouldn't be able to get cheap goods.

Obviously they're not teaching that the noun and the verb need to match.
Why should LA be different than any other major city in the country?

Over immigration, particularly above quota illegal immigration. I could give details, but it is too damned depressing.

Well I know L.A. has a large number of illegals. I'm going to say that might have something to do with it.

LAUSD is huge it has too many people in management positions and not enough teachers. Another problem it has it has too many English learners and their parents not being involved in their children's lives and education.
