Well it depends on why you have a toothache. If it is horribly painful, it probably means the nerve of the tooth is infected and you need to see your dentist to have it root canaled or removed. As for at home, best thing you can do is Advil or something similar and use ice in the area. However, DO NOT WAIT! infections like this are in your nerve and jaw bone. They are not something to mess around with, and can even infect the teeth around them, doubling your pain and problems.

If its so painful you can't sleep you may have an abscess. I know that pain ALL too well... for me I would take Ibuprofen (because its an antiinflamatory) and do warm salt water rinses. This has happened to me TWICE (lucky me i have very thin enamel). Then cold pack on 15 off 15. Sitting up helped me a bit too... but in may case I never got any sleep. Funny enough the salt water was the best thing... ambesol did only a TINY bit.
So this was my night: Ibuprofen and then salt water rinse, ambesol, sit on couch with ice pace, doze off somehow... wake up in pain 10 mins later... back to salt water, ambesol, couch.. you get the idea.
HANG IN THERE!!! AND MAKE THAT DENTIST APPT!! If they tell you to wait, tell them you think it may be an abscess.
If it is, you'll be getting an antibiotic and root canal therapy. Believe me when I say that once the root canal happens you will be feeling SO much better. Your pain will finally be over.

Ibuprofen 800 mg/6 hrs. Oil of clove if you have it, if not ground clove mixed in a drop of olive oil, apply directly to area where it hurts. Sensodyne, Orajel, there are several gel preparations at the drug store, but sounds like you're at home. Try the ibu and the cloves. Don't hesitate to contact your dr. in the middle of the night or go to the ER. You do not have to suffer simply because the time is not convenient.

1) Apply clove oil to the affected tooth.
2) Rinse w/ hydrogen peroxide.
3) Ice your face down. Cold can really help here. If you don't have ice, use a jar of mayonnaise or of jam. Both hold the cold for a long, long time.
4) Use tea tree oil instead of clove.
5) Anbesol helps. A lot.
6) Get your butt to the dentist.
