The "half-way up" is wainscoting, which is very popular these days... You can find it in any Decor Mag... In fact, do a Yahoo! Images search, and you'll see lots of examples.

Most commonly this wainscoting is white... We have medium hardwood floors, tan walls and bright white trim thoughout most of our house, and I love the combination. We get many compliments of the white against the tan.

I have several friends and associates paying good money to have wainscot paneling installed... How lucky for you, if it is existing in your house! Good Luck!

This doesn't really answer the question, but if you are putting in wood floors why not 86 the paneling? Painted paneling looks like cr-p especially when you have a nicely installed floor contrasting against it. Even if you paint it you still get those vertical lines. It's like having a nice looking '69 Chevelle with cheap discount tires - bald ones at that.
If you decide you don't like the way the wall looks after the floor goes in and wanted to get rid of it you could damage the floor.
Remember you will have to look at those walls for a long time.

do stripes going horizontally... use creme & 2 shades of tan .. med 2 dk tan then a lighter tan. get something that would b closer to the wood color that u would b using. The same hue. Paint the bttm the darker tan then tape up about 30" + then mark off for several diff. sizes of stripes. make u'r smaller stripes the creme & the other ones the lighter tan.. then u can eithr top it off w/ a smaller than the bttm. dark tan stripe. NOW u can 1 of 2 things. U can include the baseboard in the dkr tan OR add crown molding & paint them BOTH the creme. I think it will make u'r hallway longer but help accent those wood floors PLUS draw u'r eye away from the fact that u have wood paneling.

Hope that helps.. B Kreative & have fun~

Take a look at the Benjamin Moore colors - they have a number of "hues" that are along the cream to tan - if you look closely the "whites" have different color casts to them , stay away from the gray tones - they won't look nice with the white trim you already have. By the way, is the wood paneling "wainscotting?"....If you need to get rid of the "pink" before painting, use a product called "BIN" which will cover the pink before you put another coat of paint on it.......

if you want the room to look larger, try white, a light Tan, if you want you can remove it 1/2 way down and make it look like waynes coating with trim and a diffderent color at the top, I usually find an atricle in the room that has a tiny bit of that color and use that color for regular painting, enjoy, Don't be afraid to experiment

If wood floors have a gold undertone, try in light tan [ honey, or yellow undertone ]. You will probably have to re-paint the trim and top half too, so buy other paint [ off-white, or ivory ] at same time so it coordinates well.
If wood floors have a red undertone, try beige [ slight pink undertone ] with a soft white.

Tan is a good color, perhaps stay with a light earth tone, to compliment your wood flooring you're planning to install. Hope that helps. Good luck.

use a primer first such as kiltz and you can paint it any color
it is suggested to sand lightly before you put anything on it i work at an apt complex and paint paneling all the time sanding lightly first is a plus
