No, mate, we're not really racist. Most Australians don't give a stuff what color that you are, or where you come from, as long as you are a decent person and are willing to assimilate with the Australian way of life. Currently, our stupid government is on the "multiculturism" bandwagon, but it doesn't work. Every different ethnic group is pushing their own agenda instead of being encouraged to assimilate, and that only serves to divide the community and encourages racism!
Basically, Australians are a very tolerent, accepting lot, though there are always a few idiots in every crowd. Our main cause for concern here in Australia is that a minority of people coming here are bringing their greivances and religious bigotry with them and , as in other countries, are expecting us to adapt to their way of life. All that does is cause problems as happens occassionally.
So basically, if new arrivals try to "fit in" with everybody else here they will be accepted without a problem, but if they come looking for trouble, we will definitely let them know that they can "piss off" back to where they came from! And THAT'S the TRUTH!

Australia today is one of the LEAST racist of any country in the world.
Up until around 1945 they had a constitutional policy of discrimination called "White Australia". It was directed against Asians, not African-Americans. Then they totally reversed themselves and within a short time became almost completely free from racism.
The only exception is the small minority party called "One Nation," led by Pauline Hanson and targeted mainly against the Australian aborigines.
In general Australia today is much more open and friendly to African-Americans than Japan is to "gaijins" and Israel is to Palestinians and Ireland is to the English. They have an overall cordial welcoming of Americans which is much stronger than any feelings about color.

G'day,
I am an immigrant and have been living in Melbourne for over 16 years and never regret the move at all. I do not have Caucasian appearance, I speak English with an accent and I still feel like I am born in this country all along. My neighbors are combinations of immigrants and true blue Aussies and we are getting along very well. Racism will always be there in any country, but I definitely do not feel it here.
Unfortunately, some immigrants do prefer to stick with their own 'people' (due to similar background and mother-tongue) and this created some gaps between the Aussies and the immigrants. I do believe that if the immigrants do not like Australian way of living, then they should not live in Australia.
Hope this helps.... come and visit us in Australia and you can make your own judgement :)

I'm an American living in Australia and have been for about 10 years now.
I think there was more racism in America and it wasn't all from white people.
Australians like to tease - "stirring" they call it - and hate the overly political correct BS that rules over Americans, so they can come off racist when what they're trying to do is throw PC back in the faces of the overly sensitive.

I agree most Aussies do not have an issue with any Immigrants However, if you intend migrating to our Country
You will need a clean record, money initially to support yourself while you may need to do a conversion course for work, basically your living expenses and also a will to assimulate into the community and participate (have a Go). Compared to the western world it is not that expensive to live here. Most Australians are really friendly and out going! The greatest issue many Australians may have of immigrants is a lack of respect from them and the assumption of we owe immigrants financially in assistance and/or otherwise. Not saying that this you however, it's just heads up because it happens alot!
P.S If you are thinking of comming and get to come, WELCOME!

I don't care if Mr. Obama or Mr. Colin Powell or Ms. Rice or you are "black". I shared an apartment with an African bloke for two years in a provincial city in Australia, he never complained of racism though no doubt he got some.
You will find racists everywhere, including non-"white" countries. Just try being Korean in Japan or anything but Chinese in China.
The fact is that with notable exceptions and isolated incidents Australia stacks up pretty well against most other countries for lack of racism. We have our blind spots but they are spots, not whole regions.

Come on over, what are you waiting for. Believe me Australians aren't as racist as some countries. A few incidents, hey nothing to worry about. We're to wrap up with our beaches, weather, the beauty of every thing. Well what's keeping you!

How can you damn a whole nation? Some people are, some aren't. I'd say about the same as any other country - most of it is after all based on ignorance and we probably have the same proportion of ignoramuses as other developed nations. It might seem Australians are more racist because they tend to be more outspoken on everything, unlike, say, the Brits, who keep things to themselves but there is plenty of unexpressed racism under the surface in the UK, believe me.
