If you get a dog as a puppy than I would say almost any breed could get along with your birds. The key is to be consistant in your training when they are young to teach them that your birds are not a play thing!
Non-hunting breeds would probably be a good idea too!
But if you get a puppy and it is raised around the birds and not taught to play or chase them you won't have a problem!

An Italiano Spinoni. Also known as Spinoni's or Spins.
Very gentle, very soft mouth. They are bird dogs, but a retriever and they don't maul the bird. Mine loves birds. My other dogs have bird toys that chirp like the real bird. And my spinoni becomes very upset when the other dogs squeeze those toys and make the bird chirp. SHe very gently carries her bird toys around.

Properly treated the new dog will accept everyone in the house as 'family`including the bird.
As a matter of fact, if they interact, you may see more aggression from the bird.
It just takes training and familiarization for the dog.

First of all don't get a dog bred for hunting birds like a spaniel, golden retriever, lab etc. Also dogs have personalities and it varies from dog to dog-not from breed to breed necessarily. Although their breeding can give you a general idea.

We have a Bichonfrise who wouldn't hurt a fly. we have her aroung baby bunnies and she doesn't bug them. Get a dog who's history isn't around hunting or pest control. lap dogs are great they were ment to sit pritty and nothing else. Bichons are great because they don't shed, they are small and don't chew up the house as puppies.
