The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is like the honors class of Christianity. There are, of course, honors students in other churches and other religions. Not only do we believe in the Bible and prophets who have already lived, we also believe in a succession of living prophets. The prophet today is Gordon B. Hinckley. We believe in one Supreme God, our Heavenly Father. We believe in Jesus Christ, that He is the Son of God and Savior and Redeemer. We believe that along with the Holy Ghost, they comprise what is known as the Godhead. They are 3 distinct individuals with the same mission of helping God's children and other other creations to progress to the highest level possible. In our case, the goal would be eternal life, that is, to live with God again with our families in an immortal and glorified world. Check out the website below to learn more.

Young lds 14-17 generally don't have a real clear view of mormon doctrine at that age, and probably just tell you the highlights without much internal doctrine. Learning about the church is like learning Econonics or Intro to Calculus: there isn't a lot of motivation to understand.
Older LDS are no different. They'll tell you the same thing they said when they were 14-17, except they do it with more conviction.

Read "Under the Banner of Heaven." It is a book about the history of the mormon church. It tells some horrible things about the mormons from a non-mormon perspective, but it also provides information about how the church was started and how it got to be what it is now.
The official mormon church forbids polygamy. The religion was started by Joseph Smith, who appears to have been a very effective con artist. Mormons consider themselves Christians, but most other Christian religions don't consider Mormons Christians because of the whole Joseph Smith thing, they believe Joseph Smith had Christ-like powers and Christians don't believe Christ has come again yet, which means Joseph Smith couldn't have actually had those powers (according to Christians).
Mormons also do some scary things to keep track of their members, like tracking down ones who have left the church years later and showing up at their doors. There are also some disturbing rumors about what Mormons believe happens in the afterlife, but I don't know how much of it is true because Mormons are very secretive about some of their beliefs, some things are only taught to people high up in the religion.

as a former mormon, i can tell you that it is a very rigid religion and that is full of absolutes...they make being spiritual your entire life, involving every aspect of your daily life, it all sounds reasonable while you are in it but most people dont know much about how it is run....but if you are asking about the basis of the religion, basically they believe that after the tribes of israel were led out of slavery in egypt by moses and aaron, 3 of the tribes broke of from the main group and somehow settled in south america......thousands of years later, jesus visiting the new world and preached the gospel to the people there. so the book of mormon is supposedly the record of the coming of jesus to these people, and then in the 1800's supposedly an angel came to joseph smith and told himwhere to find the golden plates that this history in the new world was written and told him to translate it, but he was the only one who was given the knowledge to translate it....thus the mormon church was born....it has been through many changes but it still embraces a righteous outward appearance while at the same time the women are kept inferior and hold no real power and men hold rituals that smack of alot of masonic rituals....all in all, i met some good people in that church... but overall the foundation and practices of the church confound belief for me so i had to get out.....

There's quite a big difference, but no everyone sees the same picture, depending on where your viewpoints are.
In Mormonism:
1. God had a mother and father
2. Jesus is Satan's brother
3. Joseph Smith was a chosen prophet of God, and is greater than Jesus
4. They thank Satan for enlightening the human race to immortality
5. Jesus was married to at least 3 women, including Mary Magdeline
6. The Bible is not the complete writings of God. You also need the Book of Mormon, The Pearl of Great Price, The Doctrine and Covenants, and maybe more.
7. People that have died can still go to heaven if you are baptized for them.
There's plenty of sources for finding these.

If they are your really close friends, then they should be able to explain it to you. But I have a few friends who are Mormon too, and Mormons are Christians, so they believe every word of the Bible and everything... plus extra. It's called The Book of Mormon. Apparently, some guy named Smith spoke to God and He told Smith where some extra parts of Bible were hidden... and a lot of people were trying to steal it, blah blah blah... I don't know the rest. Like I said, your friends will probably be able to explain it better.

Mormons basically follow a religion more strict than Christianity: they do not drink any caffeine, no alcohol, and definitely do not abuse drugs. They say that they do not curse and do not practice sex before marriage. Depends on the family, but dating before 16 years of age is uncommon. They seem offended by derogatory language and public displays of sexuality.
Yes, polygyny(many wives) was a part of their lifestyle, but it is rarely seen today.

I was once curious to find out about the Mormon faith as well. I used to invite the tidy young boys, earnest and riding bikes come to talk abou their faiths with me. You should get the Book of Mormon. It is interesting that the Lord chose to send gold plates ... as if gold has a higher value in the spiritual realm.
In my personal view several new religions were created in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries under the guidance of the New World Order purveyors to break apart existing religions, and mormonism was one of those religions along with Bahaism, Christian Scienties, Wahabism, Mehdism and other branches or slight distortions of extant faiths to pry them apart and divide and rule.
Remember that all false Prophets are usually killed. They are also unable to turn their own nation to the Path of the Lord. Unlike Moses, who turned all of his nation to his way, and those who opposed him were destroyed!!

Here are the scriptures in their bible that contridict their own religion, on polygamy, on the fact that we do not need to build temples anymore, and the mormons believe in temple worship, also the church was started by an angel.
Titus 1:6
If any be blameless, the husband of ONE WIFE, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
1 tim. 3:12
Let the deacons be the husbands of ONE WIFE, ruling their children and their own houses well.
1 tim. 3:2
A BISHOP then must be blameless, the husband of ONE wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
1 corinthians 6: 16,19
Know ye not that ye are the TEMPLE of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
What? know ye not that your body is the TEMPLE of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
colossians 2:18
Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of ANGELS, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
2 Cornithians 11:14
And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
