i like to freeline a chunk of bread. which just means let it float on the surface no weight. but you better through in some peices to get them feeding.

also i use canned corn with a little anise or vanilla flavoring. the flavoring isnt needed but it helps. i sometimes put a little captain morgan in it if i find a bottle in the trash or on the bank. theres always a little left.

worms if you have alot of catfish or bullhead i wouldnt use them though the catfish will take it before a carp gets the chance to smell it.

potatoes i peel off the skin and cook them in the oven just until the skin starts popping. and just thread it onto the hook.

corn. My father likes to fish for carp and that's usually what he uses. Last week he caught a 26 inch 8 1/2 pounder.

garbanzo beans, also known as chick peas, are freakin' great carp bait. It helps if you toss a can or so of them into the water right where you're fishing.

Most of this stuff your reading here won't stay on a hook, it dissolves in water. Use a big gob of night crawlers, works every time.
