It just seems like the company that brought Nascar to the masses was just tossed aside. What really happened? how do you feel about it?

I guess I already knew the answer with tobacco laws. It just kind of sucks. After Dale Sr. was killed I quit watching for awhile. When I tuned back in I couldn't believe what they'd done to the sport. I still watch, but it seems to have lost something. Why are cigarette companies being told they can't advertise, but you still see Jack Daniels, Miller beer, and Budweiser on the cars yet. One vice is as bad as another. As for its done get over it, I just long for what used to be. It was such a great sport to watch. It has become so politically correct its just sickening, but what choice do we have. Is it going to get worse?? Thanks for letting me vent all!

Sure it was.But when the government is involved you are screwed.
The government passed laws about tobacco advertising made the "Winston" name obsolete.
The most succesful run in NASCAR popularity and events was during this period.

RJ Reynolds was no longer in a financial position to renew sponsorship of the Cup so NASCAR had to get a new sponsor and Nextel was the top bidder. It was a big surprise to me that they got it. "Nextel Cup" has never sounded right to me and I still call it Winston Cup.

It had more to do with Winston not being allowed to sponsor due to some law changes. They also pulled out of NHRA.

Nextel with little France's help have done nothing but screw up things in NASCAR though.

Not necessarly. The laws are the reason Winston eventually bailed out, but no matter who would of ended up the sponsor of the top series (short of Anheiser-Busch maybe), they would of been getting whizzed on by some of the old school fans because it aint Winston.

I think they made a mistake long before that. They no longer do things for the sport. They do things as relates to the all mighty dollar. However I still love the sport and watch it every weekend

NASCAR didn't really have a say in it. The government decided that a series sponsorship, so that TV viewers constantly heard Winston this and Winston that, was a form of advertising (well, duh!) and could no longer be allowed.

I'm just glad that they found a replacement.

Well, there was not much they could do considering that tobacco products were not allowed anymore. And in '08 it will be changed again so who has any say anyway?

It was ridiculous and is getting more so all the time. I love my races but I think that lately nascar is getting in the way of what we consider racing....

Nextel is much better, but next year it's changing from Nextel to Sprint. So...we'll have to get used to another name.
