My lifestyle is close to the Mennonite/Amish with the exception of a computer and electricity.

I think the Mennonite / Amish communities could be an example for contemporary communal living.
They believe in a stable, mostly unchanging manner of living.
The traditional Mennonite / Amish, because they are stable, family-oriented communities, help the whole society to survive, especially in difficult economic times.
They are self-sufficient; they produce their own food, clothing, housing and furniture and are able to produce enough to provide for others also. They are a good influence on the other fast-changing segments of society. They have strong, deep-rooted, dependable qualities.

I could give up my current lifestyle to join something like a family-oriented community but I would be interested only in communities which did not have only men as the leaders and women as followers.

New communities, based on the Mennonite / Amish idea could be helpful for us in the future when we run out of oil, and gas, and have to be more self-reliant.

Contemporary and future communities could practice a different lifestyle combined with hi-tech inventions which are sustainable, and do not use fossil fuels, instead of, like the Mennonite / Amish, rejecting all new things and holding that only men can be important.

I live in Ohio in the midst of both Amish and Mennonites and they are wonderful people. Honestly, they have resorted to living by a bunch of rules rather than being led by the Holy Spirit. I am all for living in a Community but with the freedom that the Holy Spirit brings. Also, in living that lifestyle I do not look at what I am giving up but rather what I am gaining.

Nope, I'm an Atheist. But the Amish and Mennonites do drink beer. Check out the Hutterites too- they're a related group (German Anabaptists in the midwestern U.S.). Interestingly, the Marxists have been failing to make communism work all over the world since 1917, but the Hutterites have been doing it successfully since the 16th century.

I went to the local Mennonite Brethren Church when I was 12. Accepted Jesus there.
Later I lived with my Dad and joined the Independent Baptist church.
Here is the Anabaptist Website. I take their weekly paper "Mennonite Weekly Review. from that website.
The Conservatives are the Amish, and the liberals are the Mennonites. They are very forgiving people, you will probably find a match. :)

Hello sweet mjh99.. :)

I would go to live with the Amish or Mennonite, if the Lord opens up the door for me to..I would consider it an honor.. :)

I have met the Amish in Pennsylvania..I longed to live, with just the basics of life.. :)

The way the world is going now, with all the wars and prices of food and shelter, some of us may soon have to live a simple life.. :)

In Jesus Most Precious Name..
With Love..your sister..In Christ.. :)

I sure could. I admire the Amish/Mennonite communities. I wouldnt miss a thing. I have always thought I was born in the wrong century, so it would be easy to adjust to their way of living

I basically did that, but I became more like a monk on a mountaintop. I had no TV, no car, no phone, no nothing, although I did have indoor plumbing and electricity. I walked everywhere, I did menial tasks for minimal wage, I read about 1,000 books in one year, I faced the truth of my soul.

It was a fantastic experience, although in the midst of it I am not so sure I would have been able to say that.

So yes, I could do it. Although I would really hope to have indoor plumbing . . .

Actually, yes. I'd miss, on occasion, wearing pants, electricity, other modern technology, but it is a life I could embrace.

BTW? Mennonites don't shun modern technology, but the Amish do.

I'd rather be Amish.

Yes - but the Amish are not that primitive They use bottled gas to operate water heaters, modern cookers and refrigerators. Gas lanterns and lamps are used to light homes, barns, and shops. Although they don't own cars it is common to see them riding in other peoples' vehicles. They accept and use modern medicine but this varies from family to family. Nor do they milk by hand these days but have modern milking equipment.
