I know this might sound disgusting but I have a serious question... My dog is about 10 yrs old. he is a german shephard. For about 2 months he has had trouble going to the bathroom (pooping) he acts like he can't go but it is all over his rear and is kinda gross but I feel really sorry for him. We have taken him to the vet and given him laxitives for it but it hasnt helped. He can't hardly walk because of it. What is wrong with my dog?? only serious answers please.

German shepards are the poster board dogs for what is called hip dysplasia. Severe hip problems and arthritis will make it painful for dogs to have bowel movements, and they will have a difficult time getting up and walking. The only way to diagnose it is Xrays, but some vets can palpate it just in an exam. Pain meds would then be dispensed to keep him comfortable.

You say it is all over his rear end--that sounds like diarrhea. Why are you giving him laxatives? Dogs strain more with diarrhea symptoms than with constipation. Also, at his age he could have hip and spine arthritis, which makes getting into pooping position difficult and painful. Your vet really should have given you some idea whats going on and if not get another opinion.

If your vet is not helping him, get a second opinion. No one can possibly diagnose your dog over the internet. Obviously, something is very wrong and your vet should be doing fecal samples and bloodwork and some others tests.

It could also be a problem with his food. If you have changed his food, you might want to go back to what worked before.

Did the vet tell you what the problem is? Maybe he needs some enemas to get things back to normal, or an Xray to make sure he doesn't have something lodged in there. Left untreated you are looking at a serious bill, so it is better to find out what it is now. If something is stuck, it may even be the dogs demise not treated. Take him back to the vet please!

I'm so sorry! Maybe something is wrong with his colon (I don't know I'm not a doctor) Go to the vet again, and tell them that the laxitives didn't work, and you are very worried about your dog! Also, tell them everything that you told us.

Go back to the vet and tell him the medicine isn't working and he is having a hard time. That would be the best thing to do.

shot in the dark but his anal glands may need to be expressed. Not all dogs express them naturally. All your vet did was treat him with laxatives??...Did they do an x ray or an endoscopy??? endoscopy is when they put a little camera thing up his butt to see what is going on...similiar to a colonoscopy for a human....does he have blood in his stool?....

do you give the dog rawhides or any other type of hard chewables? Our shepard was the same way. We gave her a few tablespoons of karo syrup and loosened her right up.

he might have a hernia... which makes him hurt while he's trying to poop. there may be a problem with worms. i would insist your vet. to run tests. and tell the dr. that the laxatives arn't working
