petfinder.com and enter your zip code, phone book, 1800 save a pet.com and you can enter your zip code, http://www.pupforum.com/adoptadog/, or you can google animal shelters and put your town or state and a list will come up, or go to your town hall .

Can't tell since you didn't give your city,state information.
Call your local pet stores. They always know the various local rescue groups and where the local dog shelter would be.
Check for humane officer in city or county listings or ASPCA in your phone book.

I don't know about where you live.. But in Canada, they have this book that everyone gets.. As long as you have a phone in your house, they give you this thing called a Phone book.. While I have to admit, I don't use it all that often.. If I wanted to look up my local animal shelter.. I would look there...
