This bird hit a large window at my work. At first, it was twitching and couldnt turn its head, i was afraid it was going to die, but after a good ten minutes of sittting there, I'm happy to say it shook it off :). Anywho i was hoping someone could identify wht it is, i couldnt find a lookalike in the bird book. Thanks!

It is a belted kingfisher, one of my favorite birds! You can see one here: http://www.enature.com/fieldguides/detail.asp?allSpecies=&searchText=kingfisher&GroupID=&cmdSubmit.x=9&cmdSubmit.y=13&curGroupID=1&lgfromWhere=&curPageNum=1

Looks like a kingfisher but not the type that we have here in Ohio. Poor thing, it just knocked the wind out of itself. I go out, and grab them up, and hold them until they get their wind back, and then sit them on my finger and let them fly away when they are ready. We have double pane windows and you probably do also. They can't see the glass, it reflects what is across from the glass, so they fly into it. When it is really cold, they will freeze before they are able to get up and fly again. I'm always having to rescue them because of our picture window and patio door, sometimes they will break their necks. Then it makes me sad, but I can't even begin to tell you, how many I have saved over the years.

What a beautiful animal! When I first looked at the picture, my mind screamed "kingfisher". However, I'm only a amateur birdwatcher, so I could be wrong. About how big was it and in what area were you? These are some key elements when trying to identify a certain specific species.

Its a Belted Kingfisher. What a cool bird! They found near water and eat fish (duh!) Its really cool to watch them hunt. They plunge into the water head first and come up with small fish. They nest in burrows in river banks and make a great rattling noise when they fly up and down the water. With Belted Kingfishers the female has more color, with a band of rust across her breast. The male is just slate blue and white.
