So the outline will cost $400?
For a half sleeve from a well practiced artist, that sounds pretty reasonable. My shoulder tat cost $450...phenomenal artist...full color and single needle detail.
You can definitely do the shading and coloring later...may even be better considering you'll be able to heal up in between sittings. I got mine done in one sitting...took 4 hours. But there's definitely no reason you can't do it in the stages you described in your question.
When all is said and done, if it costs about $800 to $1000...that's honestly not bad at all for a half sleeve, again depending on the detail involved and the skill of the artist.
Good luck...enjoy your tat...let it heal up with a nice thin layer of Neosporin daily...moisturize it...keep it nice.
My only beef...I don't do tribal. It just seems too common and over done. Most artists will tell you they hate doing tribal because it's too damn trendy. If they're honest with you like that...then they're good artists...if not...(whatever you want, you're paying attitude) then they just want your buck. That's not to say that they won't do it for you and do it well...but I enjoyed picking my artists brain for awhile and getting his opinion when all is said and done.
If you're near the Bronx, NY...I strongly recommend Tommy Houlihan at Tattoo Asylum. Phenomenal...

Yeah, it's a great thing. Sitting longer than a few hours wears you and the artist out. I just sat for 4 hours last week and had all the linework and shading done, and some of the color. I'll let it heal for 2-3 weeks before finishing it. Four hours totally kicked my ***. Sitting in one position for that long, even with breaks was really exhausting and my muscles are SORE!
I pay my tattoo artist $120 an hour, so waiting a few weeks to finish the tat helps with the money end of things, too.

That tattoo artist is an ego manic!
No offense to your friend but that pricing is friggin out rageous.
And yeah you can get the outline done first and get the shading done later. Alot of people do it, due to pain, money, time etc..
You should check around and see if you can get a better deal though.
Great artists give you great work for a great price.

It's a great way to go. Sittings that last too long as very tiring. Not just for you but for the artist as well. Breaking it up into multiple sittings is a good idea. Plus, it does help with the budget.
