I had the same thing happen to me and it is the most painful experience I ever had in my life- makes you feel awful.
Mine broke, I put off getting it fixed right away, then the filling that was there fell out- OMG I was dying!
DO not eat anything- do not drink and if you must nothing cold or hot- room temp only.
The only thing that helped me a little because nothing else I tried worked was to take ibuprofen or Tylenol- and ambesol to numb it but the nerve itself, the pain won't subside, only be less intense temporarily. I even went to the extreme of putting sugarless chewing gum on it to stop the throbbing.
What made it worse was my in laws told me to go to this one dentist, he started drilling then said I needed root canal, he put a temp filling on it because he couldn't drill any deeper- I got in the car and began driving home, the filling came out, the office had closed by the time I drove back- had to go all night with an even more exposed nerve! Finally I went to a REAL dentist who I knew was good and told him to yank it, just get it out! So I had it pulled, it was a back bottom molar.
So broken that it couldn't even be repaired, would shatter if they drilled deeper- broke into pieces when they pulled it out.
So don't prolong this, get it fixed asap!

If your dentist won't prescribe you pain medication until he can get you in, go to the ER! They will definitely give you something that will help relieve the pain. I am recovering from a dry socket that my oral surgeon said couldn't be but my regular dentist diagnosed. Nothing short of (narcotic) pain medication helped me. There is nothing worse than nerve pain. I feel for you.

Put a COLD pack on it. I have some small freezer packs ( the kind you use for a small ice chest) that I use. You might try putting a cloth -such as a wash rag around it- till you can get used to the coldness. Also take some tylenol or something. You might get some Ambesol to help with the pain.
Hope this helps.

You can take anti inflammatories for the pain, but to cover the nerve, they sell something at the drug store that may help. Its called Temparin filling material by DENTEK. Its similar to what the dentist uses for temporary fillings. ( and my dentist actually recommended this to me ) This will cover the exposed nerve and maybe buy you some time, semi-pain free.
But by all means, call a dentist as soon as possible. You don't want to risk more damage to the nerve itself, which could lead to a root canal.

Try Ibuprofen (800mg pills). Your dentist should see you right away since this is CLEARLY an emergency. If he doesn't, call another one... or simply run to the ER for something stronger for the pain. I hope you get better!!!
