I recommend you start with the Gospels.
Much in the Gospels will link you to the Old Testament, as Jesus was continually referring back to His Jewish foundations.
Read through the New Testament first (the remainder being Acts through to Revelation)
Then work your way back to the Old Testament.
Start with Genesis.
Read the Psalms and Proverbs.
Then read the rest of the Pentateuch, or Torah, which is Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
Then read the historical books from Joshua through to Job (some of which are actually poetic)
Then read from Ecclesiastes through to Malachi, and you will have covered the whole Book.

Well, when I first got saved I read the New Testament because of the Gospels / The Good News of Salvation. However, I read both Old and New Testament because I get a better understanding of all God's word and the life long lessons that can be learned from them.

If your starting to read the Bible for the first time start with the Gospel of John. After that read through the Old Testament. Refer back to the Gospel of John again and again for understanding.

"The New Testament is concealed in the Old Testament; The Old Testament is revealed in thew New." -St. Augustine

I believe it is better if you are new to reading the Word of God to start in the New Testament. The Old has a lot of laws and traditions that we do not follow anymore since Jesus came and became the final sacrifice. These can be confusing to a new convert who is not sure about the entire word of God.

To be safe I would recomend starting in the New Testament.

It has been suggested to me to gain the best spiritual insite - to begin with the Gospels - specifically the book of John. It all depends upon your priorities or goals. Genesis to Revelation is fine....It doesn't seem to matter, for the Holy Spirit will speak to you and bring you closer to God. I find the Bible fascinating, no matter where I pick up to begin reading. It's a very hard book to set down.

And as a suggestion of an accompaniment - try to pick up a copy of John Fox's Book of Christian Martyrs - written around the mid 1550's that historically documents of Christians who have laid down their lives for their faith. If that book doesn't stir you, I don't know what 'modern' day book would!
