Is 250$ too cheap for a whole hog? What questions should I ask before purchacing? I don't know any thing about this, and it sounded like a good deal.

That depends a lot on how much processing's been done, and how much hog you're talking about. If you have smoked ham & sausage, you can compare to the price per pound in your local grocery. If it hasn't been in a smokehouse, it's gonna need to be a heck of a lot of pig.
In my little corner, feral hogs are ubiquitous, and if I'm too lazy to do it myself, I can have backstraps, hams, shoulders, and twenty pounds of sausage from a 150 pound sow for $30 or $40, but I'm supplying the animal.
If you're getting a boar, make sure it was fixed young. A boar with testicles intact will run you out of your kitchen with the stink. This should go without saying in domestic hogs, but caveat emptor.

i have bought hogs before and $250 sounds like a good deal if its a big hog, and its even a better deal if you can specify what cuts of meat the hog is processed in. But in general anything below $1.50 a pound is a good deal.

Stay away until you do know something about it.If you think that you are getting XYZ,when you are getting ABC,it will be a bad deal.
Look at this site and ask yourself what it is that you are going to do with it.The only good thing that I see listed is a roaster.You can have a pit roast where you dig a hole and roast it on hot charcoal and wood.

I am being serious here,do not get a whole hog until you know what it is that you are going to do with it.
Keep in mind that you may be buying hooves and other good for nothing parts too.

You will end up with enough pig for the whole block,I do no think that is what you intend is it?

It depends on the amount of meat you are getting. If the hog only weighed 80 pounds, that's not a good deal. Find out how much meat you will be purchasing and then calculate the amount you pay per pound. It should only come out to about $1.29 per pound....that's a good deal.

Yes it is !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But make sure of the processsing that is to be done first. Remember these words. Ribs, Tenderloin, Ham, Shoulders, Butts, Bacon, etc. etc. Do NOT buy a whole hog unless you get t he rest of this. Weight, full processing, butcher wrapped,and MOST OF ALL, check the sanitary conditions.

Sounds OK... When you take a look at the carcass there should be around(roughly) a 70/30 meat to fat ratio at least, the more the meat the better.... Happy Hunting (...uh..buying?)!

Also, ask if it is ferel or grain fed. Makes a huge difference in the taste.

all the hogs i kill are processed.$250 is wat too much. i pay around $90
