First degree is also called capitol murder. It is one that is normally planned out, you go out with the intention of killing someone and you do. It is also one that happens in the course of a felony. Such as if you rob a bank and someone dies as a result, you are guilty of first degree murder, also you don't have to be the one that killed them. There is one case where two guys robbed a convenience store, the store clerk shot and killed one of the robbers and the one that live was charged with first degree.
Second degree is a heat of passion killing. Like you come home and catch your spouse cheating and kill them both, that would be second degree. You meant to kill them when you did it, but had no intentions of killing them earlier. Killing someone in a bar fight would be another example.
Third degree is pretty much man slaughter. You had no intention of killing anyone but through negligence you did. Like if you drop a loaded gun and it goes off killing someone that would fall into this category. Vehicular homicide is also in this group.

First degree murder is "premeditated" murder; a murder planned in advance, or murder associated with the commision of a felony falling under the first degree murder statutes.
Second degree murder is an "unplanned" murder with "intent", but not with deliberation, or commited by a principal or accomplice during the commission of a felony, or in some states, a "depraved mind" murder. Not all states have three degrees of murder and will instead have only 1st and 2nd degrees, followed by unintentional homicide.
Third degree murder is sometimes considered a "depraved heart" murder, a "crime of passion" murder where there was no direct intent or planning to murder.

1st degree is when you plan out someones murder, meaning it is premeditated. 2nd degree is spur of the moment where there is no legal excuse for killing someone. Manslaughter, sometimes called 3rd degree murder, has two types: voluntary and involuntary. Voluntary manslaughter is when any reasonable person may kill someone, like when a man comes home to find his wife cheating on him so he kills his wife and who she was sleeping with. Involuntary manslaughter is sometimes called negligent manslaughter, and there are it can happen when someone is careless in something and it results in another person's death, or if someone id drinking and driving and ends up killing someone.

Basically 1st degree murder is a murder commited by someone who has thougth about and planned it; 2nd degree murder is a murder committed in the "heat of the moment" such as a jealous spouse walking in and catching them and killing one or both; 3rd degree murder is when someone dies because of something you did that you could reasonably be expected to know might cause their death.
This is just a rough description- for a more detaild explanation ask a lawyer.
