The proper balance of a diet to me depends on what kind of activity you partake in and when. If you worked out in the morning, supper should be a lean meat, fresh veggies with and healthy fats (extra virgin olive oil, flax seed oil, fish oil).

If you work out before dinner, I would go with lean meat, fresh veggies and some healthy carbs (i.e., brown rice, sweet potatoes/yams, fresh fruit, quinoa). Avoid the fats at this meal, as pairing them with fat can lead to extra fat storage. This goes for any meal of the day.

Portion size is important as well. This meal should consist of between 1/6 to 1/4 of your daily caloric needs. If you are eating after a workout, make sure the carb content of the meal is higher than the protein content in terms of calories. Water or green tea to drink always.

To me it means to eat protein with every meal along with fresh vegetables and fruits. Avoiding junk food and processed foods. Drinking lots of water through out the day and not drinking sodas and juices.
