as a designer of wedding invitations i would suggest mailing them out no later than 6 - 8 weeks prior to the wedding. i would mail out the save the dates about 6 months before. if you have very many guests from out of state i would definetly mail out there invites first.

Send your wedding invitations between one and two months before the wedding. If you are having a destination wedding, where people need to make travel arrangements, send out notices/Save the Date cards with info up to 6 months in advance of the formal invitations...but always follow the Save the Dates up with real invites.

As most people are saying 6 - 8 weeks is the right amount of time. Some addition things to consider though are, the distance and planning required for your guests to get to your wedding. If they have to travel a great distance and might require more planning, give an extra 2 - 4 weeks for them, as flight prices might be cheaper and they might need to plan more for the wedding.
Also, if you have a maximum number of seats and are trying to ensure every seat is filled, you might want to send to your invitations in groups to get an idea of the numbers, family first, people in other countries, then close friends then people etc. Just be sure all groups of people that are in regular communication get their invites at the same time.
Congrats and good luck!

If you have a large number of guest you wish to invite but you can not afford to invite them all. Send the invitations early. About four months early and this way who ever can not make it will tell you in enough time to invite someone else. And four to three weeks before the wedding send a reminder note to your guest with directions from the church to the reception.

For out of town guests you should try to send them 8-10 weeks before the wedding. For local guests, 6-8 weeks is plenty.

- Mail your invitations 6-8 weeks prior to your wedding (10 if your wedding falls on a holiday or a long weekend, or if you're inviting many out of town guests).
- Its acceptable for guests to receive invitations up to four weeks prior to the wedding. After that, any invitations should be extended personally...
