He should probably be sure to drink more water (being well hydrated can help) - he may want to consider losing some weight, this often contributes a lot.
Other issues to consider are the bed/pillows - if he's falling into positions where he's causing this blockage he could probably get a better nights sleep by figuring out what needs to be adjusted in his sleeping environment.
Those nose strips they're advertizing all over these days - those help too.
The trouble with the snoring is that there are so many factors that contribute to causing it to happen it is always just one thing and fixing some causes may not be enough to overcome a larger cause.
It's a lot easier to explain with a nice visual aid, so that you can understand what, ultimately, needs to be fixed - but consider the above it'll almost certainly help.
Note that many people don't talk to their doctor about little things when they should. This is one of those little things. Odds are good that he can help narrow things down a bit. Even if he is the usual lazy slob of a GP that most people get stuck with these days.

He should go to the doctor. Seriously, snoring is a serious problem that can be attributed to lots of health issues. It is usually sleep apnea that causes heart problems, loss of brain cells, etc. Have him see a specialist at a sleep center that knows what they are doing to evaluate him. That way, nobody has to sleep in the garden...except the snails! : )

The garden? Isn't there a spare room or living room you could use? I think the fairest thing to do would be to switch off, one week he sleeps there, the next week you do.

not the dog house? lol I think the outdoors at night would be even noisier. a lot of couples actually save their marriage by sleeping in different rooms at night.
