This may seem stupid but I just cried for 25 minutes straight and I felt light headed during it and afterwards. It felt like my chest was getting smaller and I kept gasping for air. My body felt weight-less also. I gagged for a bit too. Would I have died if I kept crying or would I have just fainted?

Years ago, I heard of a woman who cried herself to death. Is that possible?

When people cry, they release natural chemicals in the brain called endorphins. These are responsible for mood and make people feel good. Exercise and sex can also release endorphins (as in "runner's high). Some of your light headedness could of been due to the endorphins. But some was because you were hyperventilating. When people cry, they don't breath evenly. They gasp, not taking in enough oxygen. And when there's not enough oxygen getting to the brain, it can make you dizzy. Gagging also is normal. When people gasp during crying, spasm of the esophagus can occur, causing a choking sensation. It's normal and nothing to worry about. Even if you became so dizzy as to pass out, which I doubt, you'd then start breathing normally and would be fine. So, no you can't die from crying. I would think the lady you are talking about probably died from a broken heart rather than her tears.

It is possible to die from a broken heart, but crying too much, no. I've cried a lot more than 25 minutes and I can tell you, I thought there was no more water left in my body! But actually, crying can be good for you, it releases certain chemicals that help you. That is why people who hold back their feeling of grief become ill, because they literally hold in the sadness and it comes out in the body in negative ways.

I hope whatever made you cry that much seems a bit better now. : )

I'm not entirely sure, but that kind of happened to me before, I cried and cried, I was so sad, (I lost something very important to me) and then I felt like I couldn't breath, and when I could, I coughed for about 5 minutes and I felt so empty, I'm not sure if you can die from it though, I doubt it though.

No you cant.. don't worry about it.

I doubt that you could release enough liquids from your body from crying to become indefintely dehydrated.

Unless you cry nonstop for weeks and weeks and you dont stop at all to drink any water and replenish the fluids your losing...
But then humans can last without water for two days, so crying for weeks without water would be impossible...

No sweet pea, you would have fainted! But I don't think that you should listen to people who talk about others dying from crying to much. becasue that is physically impossible. There is one more thing I should like to tell. I think that you should talk to whomever hurt you.

no, but emotional pain can feel like you're dying. heavy crying taxes your body but the body will adjust and balance it's self.

Why were you crying so much? If it was for no reason, you may be psychotic and need to be put on Prozac.
