I'm rabidly anti illegal immigration. But, my beef isn't so much with the illegals, it's with my own government. People have been strolling through the borders for decades. By our actions, America has been telling people that the laws don't matter, and they are welcome to come here. That's why I oppose mass deportation. Personally, I believe that we have to deport a lot of people, and it's lousy- and quite unfair. But, illegals with any significant criminal record gotta go. And yes, I realize that many turn to crime, cuz they can't be a regular average person in America. I also draw a line at say 10 years. Those who have been here a long time, ARE different than recent illegals. But, nothing can really solve the immigration problem, except a national ID. No, I don't like the idea. But, honestly, it's just facing facts. We ain't got privacy to protect. In today's world computers make lives open books. So, national ID is just having the equivalent of state drivers licenses or state ID- replaced with uniform drivers licences. After all, a Florida license can be checked as quickly from Anchorage, as from Miami. We wouldn't lose anything we haven't already lost- we'd merely face facts, and gain a perfect way to control who lives and works in America. Our social security number IS our national number. Why NOT national ID? The hard part is just what we say to the millions that HAVE followed our laws, and have applied and been waiting for years.

With the current congress we will never have a plan. Something must be done but when is the issue and we all know it is a dead issue until after the '08 elections which means nothing done until 2010 at least." What as mess we have gotten ourselves into Ollie". Legalization is not about to happen but some aspect of citizenship may not be a bad idea. It's our governments fault that we are in this mess by not enforcing our laws for 20-30 years. The numbers we are talking about are so large, maybe 40 million if we let in extended families,it would have to occur over a very long period of time or it would put to much strain on our economy and our social structure. Nothing is simple anymore but before we discuss any of this we need to get our borders secured. For right now, that should be the issue we need to yell about the most. Peace

Shift the nature of legal immigration to invite employers to sponsor qualified workers to enter legally on a larger scale than we currently do. Offer each entering worker the one time only chance to bring 10 family members with them at the time of entry into the country. This provides a ready source of unskilled labor who have a family tie to a skilled worker with a guaranteed job. That family member will aid in support and care for their unskilled family members including the prevention of exploitation and health care.
People who are here illegally will sponsor family members in their home country to get college degrees and will seek to use that individual as their ticket to leave and return legally. This system will also eliminate or greatly reduce remittances sent back to support those family members left behind.

Even if the applicants do not find jobs and company sponsors in this country then they will have promoted college education in their home countries thus raising the chances for that place to develop a stronger economy.

Close the border and see what happens. This would be a workable system.

That is what the government would like you to believe. They are not interested in enforcing the laws in this area and have made every attempt to subvert demands to the contrary. I am not convinced that another amnesty is imminent and I don't believe the majority of Americans are either. On this issue the sleeping giant has been aroused and it will be awhile before it calms down again.

First off, we had amnesty in 1986 and legalized 2.7 illegal immigrants at that time. We set up laws to prevent further illegal immigration yet officials failed to enforce them. For every illegal immigrant that was legalized in '86, an estimated four new ones have now replaced them. If we legalize 12 million this time around, we're going to send out an even bigger invitation for new illegals.

legalization is just going to encourage more illegal immigration. What they really need to do is reform the process for legal immigration to make it simpler and faster and allow immigrants to bring their families with them. When you make legal immigration the path of least resistance that is the path that will be taken. Then when you catch and deport illegal immigrants they will be encouraged to use legal avenues to re-enter the country if they know it won't take 10 years to be approved. This addresses the root cause of the problem without rewarding law breakers or cheating those who have waited patiently for the chance to enter this country legally.

Yes. If our government would just follow the laws that are already in force, they would be deporting more illegals every day. We have laws now that should be taking care of this problem. Granted we need to do something to stop all the boarder hoppers from getting here in the first place.

Yes I would say the debate has got out of hand and few realize that a legalization is going to happen eventually because its the only realistic approach. Personally I think the law and order people on the issue should join in the debate and make a hard, but reasonable path to citizenship. Those who view this as a cultural or racial battle will never join a reasonable compromise. They are not driven by rational concerns but artificial emotional constructs like race and culture.

FOX News must be up to it again.

Not that I even believe you...but I also remember someone announcing "Mission Accomplished" on the news, as well.

I am interested in doing something, too. Is ICE taking applications?

By the way, who is listening?

You can call it griping, but we Americans call it saving our country. We have the votes to make the necessary changes. The borders will be secured and jobs for illegals will start to dry up. Many of the illegals will go home. Wait and see.
