I've seen people ask hypothetical questions on this website and people seem to take them way too seriously.

It's all in the sense that emotion is seldom shown in the internet. If a person asks a joke question, how are you to know whether it's truly a joke, or something more serious? I've answered questions jokingly and gotten poor responses from the asker of the question, expressing their problem and frustration with my answer and felt terribly about taking it lightly. On the other hand, I've answered joke questions seriously and also gotten poor replies. In which case, I answer most questions with an honest and sincere (though not always so rigidly serious) response.

I'd rather answer sincerely, than take someone's serious problem or confusion as a joke - accidentally.

It's generally referred to as "pushing someone's buttons." The topic, or the attitude displayed by the asker, or some other element of the question is offensive to someone. Actually, I suppose just about any question could be offensive to someone. It hits a nerve; it reminds them of something unpleasant like tapping a sore tooth.

Don't take it too seriously yourself that some people take a question more seriously than you intended, or than you believe the asker intended. Just laugh and move on.

Most hypothetical questions have a root in personal truth at some point. They usually want a real answer. Serious is a good thing.

Perhaps serious answers are what people want.

Truly it's the way society is moving. Everyone takes everything too seriously because this one time you're involved might be the time someone brings out the lawsuit card.

Yeah, I've seen that a few times, too. Couldn't hurt to be careful, I suppose. But, it's not always best to bite someone's head off for a hypothetical, either.

Its the newcomers on Y/A.
They think that all questions posted on Y/A is genuinely serious, so they reply with an equally serious answers.
However there are others who set out to alleviate the problems of others.
Thess people answer all questions seriously, regardless of the fact whether they are seroius or not.

I've noticed the majority of people have a very large stick lodged up there ***, and what's worse, they seem proud of it, sad little individuals, that goes for all the racists, anti-racists, Christians, atheists, you are all pretty much pathetic fucksticks.

I think for me, it depends on my mood. Sometimes I come here and I am mad...so my answers are serious, sometimes I am in a playful mood and I like to mess with people.

Hypothetical and serious are not antithetical to each other. Hypothetical and actual are antithetical, as are serious and frivolous.
