I love the sardonic logic. but imagine the economy if churches were taxed. mismanagement and imbecility should no longer get a free ride.

Reading this Question and the answers to it, I am amazed at the ignorance. Churches have never paid taxes in the US because it is assumed that their existence is for the public good.

#1 It is assumed that the moral principles they teach will make people better citizens.

# 2 Churches have social programs. Tho these programs vary from church to church, they may include soup kitchens, 12 step groups, food pantries, free clothes, etc, etc

Non profit organizations are also not taxed because they help the public.

WIth both churches and non profit organizations, it would cost the government MORE to do the same thing. A volunteer working at a church can do the same thing better than several paid government employees. The volunteers actually care about people. They aren't just doing it for a paycheck and benefits. So the help is better to those in need.

Start taxing the churches and the government is shooting itself in the foot. The governments would END UP SPENDING A LOT MORE on social programs after a number of churches closed because of taxation.

You guys really need to think things thru. The athiests on this board are so proud to say that the are "the ones who think."

Not really.

Your ignorance is amazing.

And your emotional level is like that of a three year old child stomping his foot.

Churches don't pay taxes!
stomp stomp
We have to pay taxes!
stomp stomp
Not fair! Not fair!
stomp stomp

Oh the superior intellect of the atheist.

LOL

A church is a building.....by the same token, any business brought in with some kind of tax break by the city council shouldn't be able to call the fire department, either.

The people who attend church ALL pay taxes....just as the employees of those business given tax breaks all pay taxes, so they should BOTH be able to call the fire department.

While you're worried about churches paying taxes, why don't you worry about all the people running around out there gobbling up your tax money sucking up welfare when they are capable of working (there are PLENTY of people who should be receiving it, but let's face it.....there is LOTS of abuse).

Churches don't have to pay taxes. You must remember that many churches help the community as a whole. Therefore, they deserve to be able to call the fire department when needed.

Does the same go for other non-profit organizations, or are you especially hoping the churches will burn down? Tax exempt status means the State has decided they are entitled to exist in that form, with the same rights and privileges as those who pay taxes. Basically, their members pay plenty of taxes on their incomes, so it's not like the money isn't going to the tax collector. It's just not coming directly from the church.

If you want the church to pay taxes, I'll buy that argument, but calling for people to burn in a church that's on fire is so devoid on humanity that you're hurting your cause. That kind of hateful attitude is what good churches try to overcome.

The Church members do pay taxes.
Should you tax us twice because we have non profit halls, etc that consume our private donations for the upkeep?
Should we tax non profit elderly centers, for example? Should the government take up all the charitable stuff we do and save them money on?
Churches are taxed for their profit making properties and incomes.

So by that logic, no non-profit organizations should ever be permitted to use the services of the fire department.

Wow...you are an idiot. It's the other way around. The government doesn't support the church, the church is entirely composed of donated money from parishioners. Therefore it IS paying taxes because the parishioners pay taxes..
