First off, speak with your doctor. Your back should NOT hurt just for the heck of it. There's probably something that's going on.
A LOT of people with bad back pain find out that it's caused by their matresses, and especially since you seem to have worse pain at night, that might be part. Try using an "egg crate" underneath your sheets, that might do some good.
Of course try a heating pad, and if that doesn't work, try an ice pack.
Try some bengay, also try taking plenty of Advil PM (way we do it at my house: we get genaric Advil-Ibuprofin and take a maximum of 4 at at time since that is the standard prescription strength--800mg--, and take one benadryl, because that's the ingredient in all "PM" meds that help you sleep)
Your back pain may be due to an inflammation, in which case the Ibuprofin (a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug= NSAID) should help a little bit.
Try to get some x-rays of your back, and if you still can't find anything, ask for an MRI.
Make sure to mention ANY other symptoms to your doctor: leg or foot pain, numbness or tingling, weakness, even headaches!
All of these can be caused by back problems.
Good luck! I feel your pain!

First off...make sure it's not your kidneys...although if it was I think you would realize that.
Other than that, try doing 15 minutes of stretching before going to bed, and then sleep however feels most comofortable to you. You could also try putting a pillow between your legs while sleeping on your side.
Good luck.

Ow!
Is your mattress old? If so, it might be breaking down and so not supporting you right.
You could try a heating pad, and exercises to strengthen your back and abdomen muscles. But as bad as that sounds, you might do better to see a doctor or chiropractor.
Good luck!
