I think it depends on the purchase. I used to be a cashier, and I would never comment on personal purchases.
But for the most part, most cashiers are bored. You are the customer, they spend their life ringing you up. What's wrong with chatting with you ever so often about what you and she have in common, your merchandise? As long as it's not nothing personal, I don't see the problem.
I had one cashier that got to know me so well in my local grocery store when I was pregnant that she became amused at some of the stuff I'd come through her line with when my pregnancy cravings hit, anything from loads of orange tic tacs and gallons of Sunny Delight, to pounds of strawberries.
What annoys me more: People who ask me what I'm making while cutting my fabric in the fabric store. I'm making cloth diapers for my baby (or something else cooky and hard to explain), then they look at me weird. If you wanted to know, don't be shocked and act like I'm a crazy person when I tell you!

This has happened to me with one particular cashier. I didn't say anything to her, and I avoid getting in her line when I do go there. I think if you can be bold enough to speak up - you should. It's not their business, nor part of their job description. You could call up the store when you get home and let the manager know what happened and that will avoid any embarassment you may have for confronting her.

It's OK if the checker says something like, How is this XXX brand pizza? I wanted to try it.
But if you are in line buying Depends for your Mama ( and, yes, it has happened to me) and they make a snide remark, then talk to the manager. I did.
People have to buy all kinds of personal products, especially from the pharmacy dept., so checkers should not comment.

Not at all, unless they are forcefully doing it for the purpose of trying to get you to spend more money. I work in retail and do it all the time only because its good customer service to make conversation with the customer and because if I feel its a good product, that they should know. What else would she/he talk to you about? At least the he/she wasn't rude. It could have been alot worse.

I think it would be professional of them to not comment. People don't want to have to explain why they are buying pregnancy tests or jock itch medication. However, from the cashier's point of view, you must have a desire to talk to the customers. And, since you probably don't know them, the only thing you really have to strike up a conversation about are the customer's purchases.

I had an experience where I was buying some blue jeans. They are a size 0. The girl looks at me and said you going to buy those? I said Nope I just wanted to see how many I can carry out the door. Here's your sign!

I guess it would if she/he commented on something personal - like feminine products, especially if my poor husband was standing there.
Sometimes I just want to go to the store, get my stuff, and get out! That's why I usually choose the self check outs!

no. it is their job to try to be pleasant. often talking about the weather gets a little annoying if you do it with every single customer, so you have to think of other things to talk about. obviously if they criticise your choice, or discuss personal items (like condoms, sanitary products etc) it is a little inappropriate, but discussing your favourite brand of bottled water is not.

its not great big deal to me, but yes, i do find it annoying sometimes.like when my lady buys lingerie, i've actually had the cashier pick it up and look at it and comment on it.... that's not her job. the cashier's job is to ring it up and collect the money. i dont' care if they comment on everything from washing powders to hardware supplies, but to pick up lingerie and hold it for everyone to see and comment on it, that's not right. no one's complaining about commenting on ordinary things, its the things that might cause embarrassment or commenting on your size or weight that people dont;' like, common sense should tell you that.
