Actually, the cause of scoliosis is unknown. However, sometimes it is a result of one leg being shorter than the other or a birth defect. Abnormalities of the spinal cord or brainstem can play a role.

Scoliosis often runs in families so may be hereditary but research has not been able to identify a gene or genes to prove this theory.

A poor diet, poor posture, exercise or heavy backpack do not cause scoliosis. If you would like oodles of information on scoliosis, please look at this site that I found for you. It will be in layman's language:

i have scoliosis too and i am having surgery also. Well it really depends. It can be idiopathic scoliosis which means the cause is unknown or it could be caused genetically and some people are born with scoliosis. But if your parents or grandparents had scoliosis then that increases your chance of getting it. Oh and it is also more common in girls than in boys.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SURGERY!

Mainly genetics, I think. Because in my mother's side, I have a cousin and an uncle who have mild scoliosis, and unfortunately, I'm the only one who's curve reached up to 50 degrees. We haven't gone to the surgeon yet, but we will be soon, since mine is already considered a surgical curve.

But you can also get it from poor posture, coz my halfsister from my father's side got one because of that.

Good luck on your operation! :)
