Indonesia invaded in 1975, Australia stood by and did nothing (Australian journalists were killed). Indonesia killed many people and continued to have control on East Timor until 1999, including holding political prisoners. Then, East Timor held an election and voted for independence, this was followed by more violence (including children hiding in a church being massacred). Only then did Australia offer peace keeping assistance to the people of East Timor. I am not an expert at all in East Timor but to me it seems that Australia only assisted at the last moment, Australia contiues to provide Peace Keeping to East Timor (and also tried to lay claim to their oil). My last point, the First Lady of East Timor Kirsty Sword) is an Australian!

In 1975 we abandoned them and Indonesia invaded. After Independence (whenever that was) we have been part of a peacekeeping force and have provided a lot of aid. We also tried to steal the oil in the Timor Gap.

Our official role has been as peacekeepers due to the abundance of violence that has characterised East Timor's fight for independence. However, I think there are other interests at stake, such as oil and showing strengh to the Indonesians.
