You can read the law for yourself at the website below. No , passport are not needed for LAND travel to and from the U.S. right now. As soon as Jan. 2008 , they will be...so wise to go ahead and get one soon.

Currently, if you are a Canadian, you do not require a passport to enter the US...UNLESS you are entering or leaving the US by air. However this will change (as yet to be determined). The governments are currently trying to reach an agreement in using another government issued document such as a special driver's license or something, because of the extra cost incurred for people/families who do not frequent the US. Check the website but if you will be visiting the US frequently or flying into or out of the US, you had better spend the $85 ASAP. They are currently good for 5 years and are worth it because life is so much simpler when travelling out of country.

If you really want to make your life easier, make sure and take your passport with you.
You can cross by driving without your passport, however, I can guarantee that you will have a little bit of a hassle than the person that crosses with their passport in hand.

NO! with all the announcements and changed announcement you need to check back just before you try, but the answer is.
No, not yet for land or sea crossings. The change was supose to come into effect at the end of this year, but that might be postponed until the end of next year.

I'VE CROSSED THE CANADIEN BORDER GOING FROM THE USA TO CANADA AND DIDN'T REQUIRE A PASSPORT. I INLY HAD TO TELL THEM THE TOWN AND STATE I WAS BORN IN. WE HAVE A RECIPROCAL AGREEMENT WITH CANADA THEREFORE THEY DO NOT REQUIRE PASSPORTS EITHER.

Oh!!, don't expect to get one overnight!- - you should plan on applying for one months, maybe even 1/2 year ahead. Sounds crazy, but that's what's happening now.
