I got two done yesterday in les than 45mins. I was really scared and my Dr. prescribed Halcion (oral sedative) which really relaxed me (I only took one pill, an hour before my apponitment and felt tired and sleepy). I didn't fall asleep, I mean, you're at the endodontist for crying out loud! Let's be real! But honestly, the only thing that hurt was the novocaine shot which lasted for 4 secs!! It's really a walk in the park. Afterwards you'll feel a little sore, but ibuprofen does the job. I can't tell you how relieved I am... I stressed out way too much for nothing! The pain I felt before the root canal was the WORST ever. I fractured my teeth when I was little, and it developed into an "oh so painful" abscess. I was on pain meds and antibiotics (flagyl and amoxicillin), so nooo alcohol at all!! And it got so much better, and now I am almost in the clear. You'll be done and over with it in no time, good luck and don't worry!! =)

Not really. The only real part of modern dentistry that still hurts is getting "shot up" first. If your dentist is good, you should not have any pain, until your mouth "wakes up". Getting a filling usually hurts a bit when your mouth wakes up. But, a root canal actually doesn't hurt once your mouth wakes up because the nerve has been totally removed, thus no more pain.

Yes, but not as much as toothache, extraction and eventual dentures. I skipped on a root canal because I didn't have the money--don't have molars on the right side bottom anymore.
Most of the pain comes from the mouth readjusting after the tooth has been opened, the nerve killed and the tooth filled. Mostly from the pressure of the work. It's worth the discomfort, really. Have it done.

Depends on your tolerance for pain and your dentist. I have had like 5 done, and really it's no big deal. Wasn't to me, I mean, but yet can be very uncomfortable in some people. Just get numbed up good. I bet you'll be fine.
