If you have the boat, Jeffery's Ledge or Stillwagon Banks are fertile codfish grounds. Best bait either clams, herring or mackerel chunks, or diamond jigs. In the summer codfish stay in deep water from 120 to 300 feet deep.

Stay away from the baits and use jigs, this will solve the dog fish problem. The best jig for ling cod for me is the McDeep. Other great jigs to use, and they come in all sizes and varieties is, Spinnows, Diamond, Buzz Bomb, and the Cod Jig. Jig the bottom while in a slow drift so that you are covering allot of ground instead of staying in one location. Ling cod ambush their pray and like to hide in rocky and uneven terrain underwater. Try to keep your line straight up and down while jigging in these rocky areas to avoid hangups and loosing jigs.
