I have a 2 yr. old pug/chiuhuahua mix who is an absolute joy, except in the mornings. Whenever either my mom or I try to pick her up to take her outside she starts to growl, show her teeth, and snap at us. She's never done this before and only in the past few weeks or so has she started to do it every morning. The strange thing is, this only happens in the mornings. If we wake her from a nap during the day she's absolutly fine, no problems what so ever. Normally she's a very playful and loving dog and very attached to my mom and me. Does anyone have a clue what could be going on? And if so, any advice on how to break her of this habit?

My dog needs to go outside in the morning to go to the bathroom, so not taking her out is not an option. We know she doesn't want to go outside, but she has to. Also we've tried the "no" technique, and nothing changes. We tried to tell her sternly "no" but that didn't work, then we tried it again but gave her a tap on the nose as well, and she still would not stop. She has already been through obedience classes as well.

You need to just pick her up and take her out. Don't say anything to her, don't tap her nose, nothing, just take her out. Show her you are the boss. Shes's probably still doing it b/c you ar reacting to her behavior.. whether good or bad reaction she doesn't care, you are reacting.

If she has to go out then she just has to go out... be the boss.

As far as why she started??? I have no clue... did anything happen to her outside one morning? Or maybe she is just in a really bad mood in the mornings and as she is getting older it's coming out more??

Another dog or a cat may be roaming around your house at night, and she is picking up the scent. Don't let her get away with this aggressive behavior with you. Tap her on the nose and say NO sternly when she does this.

You should have the dog examined by a vet to rule out and medical problem. Your dog is training you. It is training you to leave it alone in the morning. This is not right, is it? You should be training your dog so that it learns good behavior and not bad. Enroll yourself and the dog in a good obedience class and learn about dog behavior and how to teach your dog.

I think she should see the vet to rule out medical problems. She may be starting to develop arthritis or something and may be more stiff/painful in the mornings.
