I know that you have to live off-base and you get more if you have dependants. But are there any other requirements to recieve BAH? And how do they determine if you get it?

Yes you have to live off base and you have to be one or two of these things.

1. Married
2. If not married and you have children you have to have custody of those kids.
This is the paychart with dependents and areas

If the Barracks are full then you can ask for special request to be able to live off base. No matter how many dependents you have you will still get the same BAH (all rank recieve the same BAH and it depends on the place where you are stationed at)
This is the BAH without dependents in this case:

something about unmarried soldiers and BAH

Here is a list of other pays

Hope this helps. Good luck

You have to be married or have FULL legal custody of a child, paygrade does not matter with this situation.

IF you are single you will only receive BAH IF you are getting paid for paygrade E5.

Other than that you get to live on the ship or in the BEQ if you are on shore duty.

Have you ever heard the Navy saying "Rank has its priviledges!" BAH is a privilege you earn by making rank.

you will not recieve them if there is bas housing available, most base housing is not available until you are atleast and E-3, BAH, does not pay the full amount of a rent or house payment, it is "Assistance" about $400 a month. now if rent in a decent neighborhood not to far from base goes for less than that, thats ok then, but lets get real, the average is between 500-900 for a small apartment or house, and often more. then there is electric, heat, phone, gas, vable etc. so don't get all excited thinking your going to make some money of BAH, it never happens. Get base housing when you can, all utilities, except cable and phone are free, and it is a better deal by far.

Married, E-5 or E-4 with over 4 years. Any lower single rank requires barracks to be 98% of capacity. Some commands will approve chits if you get all the quals you need for your rate, but its rare. Either way, drop a request chit... worst thing that'll happen is for them to say no =]

oh yea, if you're not married but you have dependents (kids) you still get it.

Single sailors will only qualify if they reach E5 or if their barracks are overcrowded and they get permission to move off base.

Married sailors get it regardless.
