I'm thinkin about proposing to my girl. Of course she wants a big ring. I really don't make that much. I need a place that would give me a good deal on a quality ring. If you know any place please let me know.

If we knew where you lived it would be better. Smaller jewelers do not have the markup as a chain. Also you could get one from an estate sell. You could buy a diamond from an individual who had a bad experience and get that diamond reset.

I dont know how much room for travel you have in your budget but the Caribbean has fabulous deals on jewelry. If you know anyone who lives down there, is taking a cruise soon, or works on a cruiseship, they could be helpful. Also diamond expos are great. Mine came from one of those shows. It was great b/c most stores only had 2 or 3 diamonds with the specs I wanted--but an expo had over 4 million in diamonds there.

Remember if size matters--get a solitare stone so that you aren't spending most of your money on the tiny side stones. You can always get a wrap later or a diamond wedding band for more sparkle. Also, if you compromise on the color and clarity, you can get it larger. Consider an H stone.

Hope these help

Often a small jeweler will have rings that are a little different in design -- the secret is finding a guy who really is a jeweler, not just buying in junk to sell on at inflated prices.

A good jeweler will explain to you why some are more expensive than others and how you can get the most value for your money.

My fiance bought a ring through Craigslist. (craigslist.org) It was a lot cheaper than the actual value of the ring. Then, he took it into the jewelry store (he initially met the woman selling the ring there to cerify that it was real). Then, he traded the ring in and got the full value for it when buying a new one. Try looking on your local Craigslist site.

bluenile.com also has cheaper prices on rings than some jewelry stores.

Good luck! Don't spend more than you can afford - you don't want that burden after you get married.

Check around and see if there is a jewelry district in or around your city. Usually the jewelry district have lower prices than other jewelers. Also ask your friends for recommendations. Good luck!
