1 the young man calls the young lady. period.
2. the young man covers any costs ascociated with the date (the young lady does not order the most expensive thing on the menu)
3. young man will bring flowers
4. the young man will have the young lady home 15 min or earlier prior to the young ladys curfew.
5 the young man will meet the parents of the young lady prior to the first date.
cell phones, pdas ipods and the like were un herd of.
with the exception of the parents thing i think that a few of us could stand to retry these rules

Are you talking about ages groups from 20's through 40's? Or the 1920's, 1930's, 1940's? If the latter, few people from that generation would hang out at YA.
For me, no rules beyond the bounds of human decency and friendship. I see people get hung up over interaction with dates vs interaction with friends/colleagues. For me, they are the same. If there is behavior I don't accept from a friend, I sure wouldn't accept it from someone I'm dating.

I don't know what decade this came from but my mom (born in 51) told me when on a date, ask your date what he's ordering, then you can see how much that costs and order something similarly priced. Unless you're paying, then order whatever. I like most of the old rules but with women having their own careers, I think costs ought to be paid by her...sometimes.
