It depends. There are conservative Jesuits and there are liberal Jesuits. The Curia hates Jesuits because they tend to think for themselves. All that Ignatian training got them in the habit of listening, meditating and then acting, instead of doing whatever they were told. So authoritarians consider them loose cannons and spare no effort to suppress any independence. So far, the authoritarians have been winning, but at the expense of many good ideas.

The Jesuits can barely muster the courage to believe in God anymore, let alone serve as a source for conspiratorial plotting. There is nothing much left of the Jesuits these days, except a lot of retired clergy living off endowments and their formally Catholic, but now secularized institutions-- so your friends fears are unfounded.

Jesuits are a group of Catholic monks with the past mission of conversion, now with the mission of education = Notre Dame University, for example, is a Jesuit-run school.

He probably means the Knights Templars, and they haven't been (officially) around since the 1300's.

It saddens me to have to say this but since the second Vatican council the Society of Jesus has become distanced from the Papacy and very rebellious, if you can get your hands on `Malachi Martins` book `Jesuits` you will be very much surprised at today`s society.
