I to have tasted it and cooked with when I was achef working in Singapore and when I travelled to Thailand and Vietnam, and we have here on a seasonal basis in Canada, Ilive in Toronto and the Asian community brings it in during the summer time.
When I worked in Singapore as a chef for a Canadian hotel chain, we also used a cooked paste made from the same fruit, it has a creamy texture, and has a taste like a ripe melon, a bit sour like a yougart, and a definite aroma, some compare it to a cross between a pair of old socks and dirty diaper.
And that is why most people in North America are turned off by it and cannot even stomach the first bite, and in warm weather I can be a powerful odor, but I would eat it everyday if I could.

yes ive eaten it, originally being from the philippines durian is a common fruit, durian is an aquired taste, meaning if you didnt eat it a few times as you were growing up you probably wont like it, i myself find it good, its not my favorite fruit but i enjoy eating it occasionally. the tastes is unique in my opinion, no way to describe it, but you should definitely try it.
