Why not "ascension" at the age of 30, like in "Logan's Run"?
The 65 and out concept was also explored in a Star Trek (TNG) episode, with David Ogden Steirs.
Lack of population control to the point of a square foot of living space for each man, woman, and child was the plot in another Classic Star Trek episode.
The problem with population control is that it cannot anticipate extinction level events that might necessitate having more babies in a hurry. And the Steirs episode dealt with people who really only reach their prime of contributing to society's needs in relative old age.
All of these proposals assume pressing social and economic need, such that human dignity would have to be weighed against human survival. Better dead than Red?

Ask China how that 1 baby rule worked.
You can't put an age on it, but the Inuits have set their old and infirm adrift on ice floes for a long time. I guess, with global warming, this is no longer really an option though.

People in 1907 just 100 years ago only lived to be about 45 years old. People live to long now. 80 is to long.

My guess is that if it were applied to the US population, all you'd have to do is promise them a lifetime cable subscription and they'd buy it.
For myself... it's get out the gun time when people start talking social control.
