We have people over alot and we got our pup a month ago. He's so sweet and hes great once you get to know him, but i think he scares my friends a little because he just barks and growls for sometimes 20 mins on and off until he realizes they're not gonna kill him (LOL). Is there anything i can do to make the experiance of people at the house more pleasurable for him? can i calm him down in some way? Thanks.

Keep a leash and treats by the door - when the bell rings, put the leash on him so you have control. When anyone comes in, ask them not to look at him but take a treat from you then give it to him. When's he calmed down then you can take the leash off, if not just keep it on him and tug on the leash when he growls. Eventually he will be happy when people come to the door.

If it continues, ask your vet to recommend some manners classes for him - you can find them all over, even at petsmart or petco.

Good luck!

Socialize him!! Not all at once maybe, do it in spurts- have a friend over and have the dog interact/play/"hangout".. Do the one friend thing (switch up the people if you can) for a good period of time say 2 weeks or so. Then slowly increase the people regiment, to 2 -- 3 -- but don't think he's cured from his aggressive behavior all at once. In other words think of it as a job socializing your dog, it's a serious thing because if you have a dog that has a natural "bad disposition" around people to start with if not corrected thoroughly through lovingly care and attention (the right way) you may wind up wanting to get rid of the dog down the line.

Hope that helped a bit- there are some great books on dog socialization... Check out Borders, Amazon, etc...

My Toy Rat Terrier is 6 & my German Shepard mix is 10 & they both still bark when someone knocks on my door or even walks past the house. We tried spraying them with water when they barked. It wasn't very effective , but i think it was worth the try. It worked a little though. If someone my dogs have never seen before comes over the they tend to bark a whole lot more! But if they know the person pretty well once they see the person they settle down a little. Maybe if u pick him up & pet him or scratch behind his ears [ or do something special that comforts him] he might settle down.Let him sniff your friends & he might get get used to them. it will reasure him that your friends will not hurt him.

yes there is. You have a one year old dog that you have only owned one month. The dog has not be trained nor has the poor animal been properly socialized. This is really important. You could end up with serious problems.

First of all you need to learn to be the leader of you "pack". In dog language this is so important. He will look for you for guidance and not see the need to defend the home if you are the leader.

Next, please get him and yourself to basic obedience training. This will help to socialize him with other people and dogs. They are the experts and they can help you at lot.

Please do some research and watch "The Dog Whisper" on the National Geographic Channel. He gives great advice and its free.....

Good luck

Does your dog ever get out and see other people? It is very important to socialize dogs, ie. obedience classes. Take when out for walks, take him into different situations where there are people so he gets used to people other than just yourselves. If this is not possible, then use either of the previous answers. Try the treat at the door and if nothing else, put him in his kennel away from your company if you can't control him.

Forget making the experience more pleasurable for him - he needs to learn manners around other people. He needs to be socialized around other people much more and he needs obedience training to learn to follow your commands. When people come over, you should put him in a down-stay command make him stay there until you release him.

Enroll him in an obedience class - right he's calling the shots, not you. You need to teach him how to behave around other people.

Tell your friends when they come in to bend down and let him sniff their hands and once the pup smells them out pretty good then pet him. I think the dog just thinks they are intruding on y'alls property. Once he gets a sniff of their scent and knows they arent going to hurt him he should be fine!

Maybe he's trying to be protective. I used to have a german shepherd like that, and after he seen my friends more and more, he got used to them. and then again...german shepherds are supposed to be protective.
If you want him to stop barking, get a spray bottle and give him a squirt. You could also buy a shock collar, but I would never use one.

he's just unsocialized. you'll want to start getting him out in public whenever you can to get him used to different people and places. he won't like it, but it's for his own good. if you have a petsmart near your home, they will probably offer training classes where he will get to meet dogs and people of all shapes and sizes or doggie day camp. that will help him alot...he just needs to get used to different looks and smells.

he needs to socialize outside the house with outside people.
keeping him strictly at home isnt good.
he's viewing all people who come to your home as intruders.

take him out for long walks so he can be around the general public and different places.

he might be getting alittle cabin fever like we do
