The most common cause of rectal bleeding, particularly if it is bright red, is hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are varicose veins in the anus. They are usually caused by constipation, so increase your roughage (fiber, green vegies, fruit, cereal) and fluid intake. Also, if caused by constipation, do not strain when going to the bathroom. They can also be caused by pregnancy.

Although hemorrhoids aren't the only cause of rectal bleeding, they are the most common cause. Please be sure to see your doctor to verify that the bleeding is from hemorrhoids and not some other health issue.
