I've noticed that a lot of times when I'm at school, some girls will put their hair up with a rubber band or in a ponytail right before they enter the classroom. This way it is not long, flowing, and on display by outlining their faces.

Do they do this in order to appear less attractive and unappealing to their males classmates? Also, is this what you ladies teach your daughters to avoid romantic contact?

I just wonder because it seems like this is a technique they use to possibly discourage males who may have a romantic interest in them. I this the reason why?

I'm especially looking for answers from girls of all ages.

My intention was never to offend anyone or to seem judgmental or misogynistic. I asked the question because I am sincerely curious as to why women do this but I am not making a judgement. A couple responders mention that women don't purposely try to appear attractive of men in general it's for themselves. Others asked it I think girls look attractive with their hair up. First of all, I think that women are attractive until their personality proves otherwise, which I also think of men, children, and everyone who acts like a jerk to impress. I focus on the inside not the outside. Secondly, I believe I said looks less attractive not unattractive. I think we can agree that certain hair styles are appealing which is not a bad thing. Finally, I find girls of all type to be attractive, including girls who wear braces, glasses, and of various colors, shapes, and sizes. Personality is what counts to me, not looks. I just don't like people who attack draw conclusions and attack wrongly.

Thanks to the people who answered with a nice, sweet, sincere attitude and understand the spirit I mean the question in. I'm not attacking anyone or making a statement about women. It's just a question. After all, we all come from different experiences, cultures, background, and interactions with others.

Some may do it just to keep it out of their face. Looking down at the desk, while reading, writing, and having to stop and brush back the hair with their hands.

I bet some of the girls that you observe in the class doing probably have a great grade average. The hair pulling back like a subconscious act of stating they are ready to get busy/

I clip my hair back because I am going into class to pay attention, and I can't when my hair is all in my face. It's annoying more than anything, would you want hair tickling your face while you're in Art History trying desperately to take notes fast enough and understand the information?

My mother never taught me to be unattractive to men, and also a lot of women think they look cute in ponytails, and they do!

You must come from one of those families that is still Puritan or stuck in the dark ages or something, because the world is changing. Girls and their mothers want to be attractive and date, that's how the world is these days.

no, not at all. if we have long hair we do it because it's annoyoing as heck. Think about it for a minute, how anoyying would it be to have something hanging off your head that was hot, itchy, and it required you to brush it off your face every 2 minutes? We do it to keep it out of our way. also, if you put hair in a ponytail or other updoo right, it can look great on the right person.

So do you think pony tails are less attractive? That's what it sounds like. Girls put their hair up for all different reasons and I'm pretty sure they are not thinking " I'm going to do this so I will look ugly today" It can be very cute, sporty, and sexy depending on the way you wear it. I love to wear my hair in a pony tail with big hoop earings. It looks sexy to me.

Mostly, they put it up to get it out of the WAY.
Or because its cooler that way, or they're having a bad hair day.

I've never heard of trying to be less attractive by wearing a ponytail--that's a bizarre idea.
A pretty girl is pretty no matter WHAT she does to her hair.
If you think a girl is less attractive with her hair up, then you seem to be pretty shallow.

Girls aren't constantly trying to be attractive to males. When I put my hair up it is to keep it out of my face and off of my desk while I'm doing my work. No one encouraged me to do it. It just gets it out of the way.

A guy who really has a "romantic interest" in me won't care if my hair is back, down, or cut super short.

Well, i'm 21 and I only put my hair up when I don't want it in the way (like it would be when i'm taking notes in class) or when I don't want to deal with it/haven't washed it. I've never known a girl who puts it up to be found less attractive although I will say...I am definitely less attractive when it's up! Haha.

Some girls really do think they look better with their hair up. I usually put my hair up because I hate having my hair in my face. There are many reasons a girls doesn't have her hair down.

My hair has almost always been quite long. I put it up in class so that it doesn't distract me or get in the way of note taking. (After you look up and back at your paper a few times, my hair falls and then I have to move it , ad nauseum

duude, we do it because long hair gets annoying. Girls wouldnt do that to appear less attractive. Is is truely that big of a deal, and if you think having their hair out of their face changes the way they look, thats just rude.
