Some interesting passages on the topic:
Titus 1:16 -- They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
James 2:14 -- What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
v. 17-18 -- Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
v. 26 -- For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
Rev. 20:12 -- and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
While we know that it is by Grace that we are saved, works plays a role in how we will be judged. Our eternal reward will be based on how we live our lives -- our works. With that said, it is also clear that simply living a good life will not get you into Heaven--only Christ's Atonement is able to make up for our shortcomings and allow us to receive Eternal Life.

Works are simply doing that which is good towards others. Those things that are good are those that are faith based. To believe in God,His Son,and the Holy Spirit, and do the things commanded of God,following in the ways of Jesus, and allowing the Holy Spirit to be present in our hearts(minds),this gives us that faith, that trust in God,and the baptism of the Holy Spirit ,and repentance of our sins confessing our sins to God,and towards others causes good works to prevail.Meaning it's the first step in showing the good works that are wrought within us by the Holy Spirit. When we have trust(profoundly rooted in Christ)we have faith, and we will give God respect, and honor, and treat each other well.Works without action is dead. But works with trust in God desiring to do his will, and the right thing is works with faith, and the belief in God.

There are two different types of "works".
1. There is no work anyone can do for God to earn life. He already created everything so we can't make anything to earn life. So life is a gift from God.
2. There is work required of true Christian followers of Jesus. One of the majors is preaching and teaching. (Matt. 24:14) Another is keeping and obeying the commands of Jesus. Living the life instead of mere words. (James 1:22)

Jesus said this:
"Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. "
Matthew 12:33
In Romans Paul says this:
"...whatever is not from faith is sin. "
Romans 14:23
All of our works spring forth from one source or another. Either they are birthed out of faith, or they are birthed out of self-reliance and the flesh.
One of the foundations of the faith listed in Hebrews chapter 6 is "repentance from dead works". That has been interpreted in different ways, but I believe it means that anything that does not issue from faith is dead, being separated from the Life of God and therefore incapable of bringing forth anything of lasting value.
Paul twice makes mention of the obedience of faith, at the beginning and at the end of Romans. This means an obedience that comes forth from a state of being in faith. Any other kind of obedience cannot please God.

Our works never save us, period. We are saved ONLY by the shed blood of Jesus Christ and the grace that He gives us. But, unless we are livin gin obedience to the Lord, we arent really saved and we dont really love HIm. We will do good works because He loves us and we love Him, not to be saved. IF one isnt willing to do the good works for God they dont really love Him , and have never been saved. Yes, we are saved by Grace, but by the shed blood of Jesus upon the cross, we can overcome sin just as He did, and God commands us to do that. He says IF YOU LOVE ME< OBEY. so come on folks, all this talk that grace will cover continual, deliberate sin, is ludircous Wasnt the resonse to that ??? GOD FORBID. yes it was. Works wont save you, but i fyou have none, you wil not be saved, period. God needs more than lip service. He wants our love and our obedience, to be faithful to Him and stand for Him to represent HIm. How can we even wittness to someone.? What do we say? HEy, look I am as messed up as you, God never chagned me ,and He cant change you either???
Gimme a break here folks. God says this message must be taught throught the world and that the devil has taught this lie wy too long. YOU MUST obey, you are commanded to obey.
and yes, work increases your faith, and oh so much more.

When we have first faith, it is because GOD has LOVED us and brought us to believing . .. and it is through faith we obtain GRACE. This means we are moved to repent, and to be BAPTIZED because we have faith in CHRIST. Now we've been saved? This is where some get lost, because you must be BAPTIZED you can't just say a "salvation prayer" but must be BAPTIZED in the TRINITARIAN formula. That's important, but now that we've done these things. Do we sit on our rumps and say i'm saved back to work?
No, we then pursue the LIFE OF CHRIST, working for the food which does not parish. We then store up our treasures in HEAVEN.
If we produce much good fruit, if we are very profitable in building up the KINGDOM OF GOD we will have treasures in HEAVEN. These are merits that GOD gives to us, and what do we do with these merits? We use them for the salvation of souls. Because the treasures of HEAVEN are figured in LOVE and LOVE is a thing to be shared . .. what is LOVE if it is not given? by giving LOVE we are LOVED and we should find joy in this
Those who have done much for GOD, praying in private will be rewarded publically, helping a poor child will not lose their reward, for what you do for the least of people you've done so for JESUS CHRIST. And JESUS CHRIST shall rewad you for these works of LOVE.
The wages of sin are death. but the works of LOVE are how we store up TREASURES IN GRACE.
LOVE your neighbor as yourself.
Amen.

Like .. duh.
Works is what we do with our faith with the help of the Holy Spirit(ministries, helping people in need, witnessing to people - helping them to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior who died for their sins and rose from the dead 3 days later.
According to his work is kinda like being on a plane going to heaven. There are 1st, 2nd and coach class seats.

We show our faith BY our works. Like when Jesus healed the paralytic, He said..what is easier, to say to this man your sins are forgiven or rise up and walk. Forgiveness of sins, like faith, can't be seen, but works, like healing the sick, are visible signs of what is in our hearts

Verse 8 helps. It labels those who do wrong to be self-seeking. This indicates a problem with the heart. If your heart is right, you will do what is right. If your heart is wrong, you will do what is wrong. So our actions are directly influenced by our relationship with God. But remember the parable of the talents, too. The ones who used their talents received more. The one who didn't had his taken away.

By God's grace, we have been given faith, which includes believing and helping others/works (e.g. whatever you did to the least of my brethren, you did it to me). God bless.
