The PS2 is region locked. So your US PS2 can only play US games.

Modding the PS2 isn't terribly hard an generally doesn't harm your system.

There is a chip that has to be placed in the system. I have done it when I was stationed over seas. The cost will run you about the same as buying another PS2 of that region. But the chip will allow you to play copied games.

Have a look on the under side of the console and it will ether have,NTSC,PAL,NTSC/J.all of the letters mean that they are a different console format so that you can only play games from 1 region( unless you have a mod or swap disk like me) .
Go to a game store and have a look at the game case and see if they have the "NTSC,PAL,NTSC/J" on the case if the "NTSC,PAL,NTSC/J" is on the game case then the game will work on your console.have a look at this link,it has the region on the pix so that you can find out where you can get games from that will work with your console...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:PAL-NTSC-SECAM.svg
